In this revealing and frank interview, former-gang members & anti-violence activists Vidal Guzman & Chris Williams peel back the layers of prejudice and marginalization to explore the root causes of violence. Cycles of recidivism, systemic abuse, violent over-policing, and self-defense-driven cycles of retaliation uncover a deeper, more complicated story than the classist/racist stereotypes we’re often fed.
Centering Black Spaces, memory, joy, flexing, the fluidity and deconstruction of gender and so much more - these are exactly the kind of things I love supporting and producing with The Notice Blog
There are often times I'm reminded of my great grandfather's lessons in practicing joy and compassion for others, just by hearing his own laugh echoing in my own. And through the nostalgic tears of memories, I'm healed. I want to remind people of this kind of healing. Of this kind of haunting.
a good haunting.
So, I edited a quick little clip of my Cinematography work on Jean-Sebastien Surena's "Quarantined Thoughts," directed by Suswana Chowdhury. Enjoy.
Imagine 2 Black witches working together to seemingly escape, then defeat a danger that we cannot see. In a way, that’s the life of Black folx working for liberation - a lot of people can’t see the magic, nor the danger it saves them from.

Here’s some test footage for an upcoming project. I figured it’d need a decent tune to accompany it. And two hours later, this came out. 🖤
Over the years, I’ve made countless little short songs for myself, friends, loved ones, clients - even dates.
Some have words.
Some don’t.
Many are in a cappella.
They aren’t the most polished.
But they’re original.
And they’re me.

A music video of J. Read's 2019 single "Everything." As J. Read leaves his basement, the world around him becomes increasingly otherworldly, creating a collage of iconic Newark images and tropes until his final verse at the famous Black Newark hot spot, La Rouge Lounge.
So a couple of weeks ago, Elliot and I produced a #musicvideo for a dope af friend, fellow filmmaker and amazing singer @vonmiddleton for his song #putitonyou Making art with friends is always dope 🙏🏿 check out the full song by searching “Put it On You Von Middleton” on YouTube. 🎥 @clutchmastere 🎬 @paul.noticeaka @thenoticeblog

We're finally WRAPPED on filming for the Director's Cut of "Willow: State of Emergency."
Big thanks to the ultra-talented Ashely Jones (Willow Kerubo Brown) and Suzanne Darrell (Vanessa Masiko Drew) for joining our cast.
So, when I was asked to direct & produce the film adaption of MIRRORS, we were faced with a daunting issue: Instead of the usual 28-35 days needed to shoot this film adaption, we only had four.
So, the question became: “How do we shoot this in FOUR days?” Yep, that’s right FOUR DAYS. I got to thinking, scheming, and dreaming, and eventually, here were my solutions…

Imagine a product that people consume more of as the price rises - and vice versa. Imagine something that violates the basic law of demand in microeconomics. That’s a Giffen good. […] We became starkly aware that both Orlando and I were once - and in some respects still - considered a Giffen good. The performance transformed into a defiant act in the face of statues of YT men long dead, who once sold us on the steps of Wall Street.

We’re producing an All-Black horror film, where Black & Brown folx - once fed on by centuries - are now running out of White people to eat. It’s called “Willow.” Find out more here: bit.ly/willowhorror
"Willow" is part of a larger project, sponsored by The Notice Foundation, a 501(c)(3) private foundation that develops and supports narratives from marginalized communities. The "Willow" project focuses on hiring BIPOC folx behind the camera, as well as in front of the camera.
In a world, that literally runs on the blood of Black and Brown bodies, a new day has finally come.. at a price. A vivid retelling of Audrey Lorde’s adage: “the Master’s tools shall never dismantle the master’s house” - ‘Willow’ explores a less innocuous understanding of American society, through exploitation, relationships and capitalism.

On Tuesday, I got the opportunity to co-direct & shoot with my producer/co-director buddy Pierre Jean Gonzalez on an immensely powerful piece that tackles gender & sexuality in Bomba.
Here’s a film that I’m REALLY proud of: “Release.” I co-directed, edited and DP’d (director of photography) on it. And I was smart enough to ask for help from Katrina Reid (1st AD/ Production Manager), Dominik Czaczyk (Gaffer/2nd Camera) & Sultan Ali (Grip/2nd AC). After nearly two months of pre-production, we managed to turn two days of shooting into a masterpiece.

When a high school student is forced on an errand to Trader Joe's, he runs into a stranger who might be able to save his life.. at a cost. Inspired by the death of Trayvon Martin, 'You Can't Die Here' explores the violence against unarmed Black men in a way that hasn't been seen before. Originally produced as a stage play in IMPACT's 2012 Director's Weekend, the original cast and playwright remade this story for the screen.

TRAILERS + Event Videography
In our constantly digitizing world, video has become one of the biggest vehicles to promote local events to a larger audience. Take a look at some of our event video footage in the link below:
I started homecoming back in 2015, and had been slowly but surely whittling away at hundreds of hours of footage - then a robbery took away some of my most prized memories: the 100th birthday of my great-granddad, Lilbert "Buddy" Hollins. It would be the last time I would see him alive. It was hard enough to work on a documentary that unabashedly looked at my depression, survivor's guilt, and PTSD while visiting the home, but the loss had become too great.

Community is key.
I’ve been thinking about Community more often, since editing “Sweet Water” a short doc about Black communal spaces, & as the name implies; a Black commune in Southside Chicago, called “Sweet Water.” Fortunately, some good friends, Alex Antoine & Aaliyah Cristine, introduced me to this place.

In the 1980’s, Reagan’s “War on Drugs” put Crime in the driver seat of American politics. Tough on crime laws then came in the Clinton era, spurred on by politicians like then-Senator Joe Biden. Black and Latinx communities were hit the hardest; and the state of Michigan was no exception.
In this fourth installment of the #GangDatabase series, we talk to Marnie Lenox & Afrika Owes about the constitutional and ethical issues surrounding NYPD's use of a gang database.
n Episode 3, we explore different points of view on love and relationships with familiar faces from earlier projects In the Heights, relatives in St. Louis and people encountered in Washington DC. Here we recount stories of when lovers first meet, the permanence of relationships then & now, and finding meaning and significance in both.
In the midst of it all, these stories reveal the undeniable parallels of love across color, age, and sexuality that ultimately deconstructs the Other.
With crime at an all-time low, NYPD Chief of Detectives, Dermont Shea, is spear-heading a new media frenzy to encourage the city to continue spending millions in policing: Gangs are Coming Back. But are they?

DOCUMENTARIES
Our biggest passion is in producing engaging and informative documentary work and news segments. In all of our non-fictional work, we always seek to convey the power in the countless stories told both on a local and national level. See more of our work in the link below:
For “Good Times,” I wanted to use a quick dip into my personal life, as a framework to examine to complexities of Black Existence. I’d wager one of the biggest commonalities we have in the Black Experience is reconciling what the world sees/expects of us, and who we really are. We’re haunted by the racialized toxic positivity alluded to in the lyrics “Shut Me Up for the Good Times,” the anti-Black intentions behind mass incarceration in “Lock Me Up for the Good Times,” and cognitive dissonance from a litany of Double Consciousness byproducts.
