06.14.21 Quarantined Thoughts + I Miss BedStuy

So, I edited a quick little clip of my Cinematography work on Jean-Sebastien Surena's "Quarantined Thoughts," directed by Suswana Chowdhury. Enjoy.

06.11.21 “I miss Bed-Stuy.”

I miss Brown smiling faces.
Love in every corner.
Black folx that say hi to each other on the street.
Sermons of Black empowerment,
and misplaced intentions of healing-turned-queerphobia
Jerk Chicken and Dissertations
From grad school, 2nd generations.
3-Speed Bikes, and Shea Butter.

I miss the hate too.
Much more contained to the police and a couple of self-hating Negros,
than in the pervasive grounds of where racial exclusion pacts once ran rampant…
That is, where I live now:
A place my ancestors fought to “reverse gentrify.”
And place I want still to flee.

I miss the smell of fresh hard dough bread
I miss the dreads,
The way people see my dreads.
The way people remember the dead.
The way we said what we said.
And I said.… that I miss Bed-Stuy.
